The Past and Future of Rights Cinema …will focus this year on the question of rights cinema and film in the context of Africa. Launching from the publication of a new book on African Cinema and Human Rights, in the year of the 50th anniversary of the FESPACO African Film Festival in Burkino Faso, the day will centre on fiction film, documentary, essay, experimental films, and animation to discuss the relevance and difficulties of realising rights cinema in the context of Africa. Drawing on a range of films and examples, invited speakers will debate the role of cinema and media in advancing rights and how this can be done.
