Creativity, changemaking and community

From art workshops to digital skills, our community has been buzzing with energy and creativity. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen men explore identity through art, Champions share their power for change, hospital leaders commit to fairer healthcare and much more. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to in our busy Autumn months!

We recently launched our Men’s Art Workshops with researchers from King’s College London (KCL), part of an exciting new project exploring how migrant men experience housing insecurity, climate risks and social exclusion. In our first PATH session, participants expressed what home and life in the UK mean to them through printmaking. Later on, they used paint, pens, leaves and newspaper cutouts to create colourful self-portraits.

One participant told us, “I’ve not tried making art or been creative before, but I really enjoy these sessions. I want to try this with my daughter.” Future workshops will continue to offer creative space and conversation, giving us the chance to hear directly from men about their experiences and hopes for the future.

Our Community Champions also came together for a workshop on knowledge for changemaking. The session was full of reflection, laughter and inspiration as Champions shared the issues affecting their communities and explored how real change begins from within. They spoke about their biggest challenges and celebrated those who inspire them most, their “magic changemakers.”

We were so humbled and moved to be named one of them! The energy in the room reminded us how powerful community-led change can be and how much wisdom sits within our Champions’ network. Thank you so much to Priti and Richard from KCL for running these sessions.

On a larger stage, our team joined the Citizens UK South London Assembly to call for fairer healthcare access. This followed a powerful roundtable we co-hosted with NHS Foundation Trust leaders from Guy’s & St Thomas’, King’s College, and Lewisham & Greenwich to discuss migrant charging.

We presented our migrant charging campaign and invited hospital leaders to commit to a new community partnership that will help inform and support migrants affected by NHS charging. It was inspiring to stand alongside hundreds of community leaders, celebrating wins on housing, the Living Wage and migrant rights. A huge thank you to Citizens UK for bringing us all together for such a hopeful evening.

Finally, our first round of Intro to Digital workshops wrapped up with smiles and certificates all around. In partnership with Code Your Future, participants built essential online skills, from navigating smartphones and apps to managing mobile banking and writing professional emails.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants saying they feel more empowered using their own devices. A huge thank you to Code Your Future and Capgemini for leading an engaging and practical course that has allowed community members to feel more confident online.
