Stronger voices and positive steps forward in Lewisham

From building confidence to securing commitments with decision makers, there is real progress to celebrate in our community.

At this month’s Lewisham Migration Forum (LMF), partners came together to share updates, reflect on current immigration policy and discuss how organisations across the borough can continue strengthening inclusion for migrant communities.

It was also a valuable opportunity to welcome newly elected Green councillors, including the Mayor, who reaffirmed their commitment to the Five Basics in temporary accommodation.

The energy in the room reflected the strength of the network and the shared commitment to making Lewisham a borough where migrant communities feel welcomed, heard and represented!

Our Community Champions recently took part in community organising training with Citizens UK, focusing on leadership, confidence and how communities can organise around shared priorities. Through practical activities and role playing, Champions explored how to communicate effectively with decision makers and build support around the issues that matter most to their communities.

The session created space to learn from one another, strengthen relationships and develop skills that can support long-term change. It has already been exciting to see this learning in action, with one Champion recently taking part in conversations with MPs at the House of Commons through Migrant Voice. It was a brilliant example of what can happen when people feel confident and supported to use their voice!

Did you know that we’re hosting our own Refugee Week event? This year, LRMN will be bringing people together for United in Courage: Voices of Strength and Solidarity, a special evening celebrating the courage and contributions of refugee and migrant communities in Lewisham. With support from Lewisham Council and the Migrant Futures Institute, the event will create a space to celebrate and stand together in solidarity during Refugee Week.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming our community and partners for what promises to be a meaningful and uplifting evening!
