How we built community during Refugee Week

On Saturday 13 June, communities from across Lewisham came together at The Mulberry Centre for a one-day event, United in Courage: Voices of Strength and Solidarity.

Held as part of Refugee Week, the day brought together performances, workshops, art and storytelling and shared celebration in a warm and welcoming space for all.

The event created an opportunity to recognise the resilience and contributions of refugee and migrant communities, while bringing neighbours, families, organisations and supporters together in solidarity.

It was a day that celebrated not only courage, but also the strength of community!

Throughout the day, we welcomed those looking for information and support, whilst our partner organisations held creative activities which brought children and families into the heart of the celebration.

Children enjoyed drawing, making unique pins and taking part in activities that encouraged expression, play and connection. At the same time, local businesses introduced their products to attendees, adding colour and a sense of exchange to the event.

Participants also took part in performance workshops, which were warmly received and later praised for the vibrant impressions they left on the day.

As a day of solidarity, the event also gave families an opportunity to engage their children with the diverse community they are part of.

Through drawing, playing and connecting with others, children were able to experience our shared values of kindness and solidarity in a joyful way.

The Mayor of Lewisham Liam Shrivastava and Vicky Foxcroft MP for Lewisham North also took the opportunity to thank those who attended and to celebrate refugee communities and the spirit of togetherness that shaped the event.

To close the day, Citizens of the World Choir brought a joyful ending with a mix of songs and lyrics that carried the audience across different experiences. Singing about love and acceptance, the choir reflected the spirit of the event itself.

Made up of both British and immigrant voices, the group celebrated multiculturalism and showed how music can bring people together in a powerful and uplifting way. Their final performance of Azizam filled the room with excitement, leaving attendees smiling and carrying that energy with them as the event came to an end!

United in Courage was, in every sense, a celebration of connection, exploration and community. It showed that courage is not only about facing challenges, but also about reaching out, building relationships and creating communities where people feel welcomed and valued.
