LRMN stands against immigration raids

Lewisham Refugee & Migrant Network (LRMN), alongside the LRMN Anti-Raids Working Group, believe that individuals in the UK and abroad should be free from intimidation and harassment by state actors regardless of nationality or immigration status.

Our position

We believe that immigration raids in homes, workplaces, and neighbourhoods are increasingly used by the Home Office as tools of fear and are dependent on the fact that many migrants do not know their rights.

We are opposed to immigration raids, which are a violent attack on our communities and instil fear, isolation, and instability among vulnerable groups.

Our commitment

LRMN is committed to empowering refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to know and exercise their rights, thrive, make a positive contribution, integrate and take control of their lives.

Our Anti-Raids Working Group aims to take action to advocate for and empower our community to resist immigration raids and to foster local solidarity and support for individuals, regardless of immigration status.

The context

Immigration raids are targeted enforcement operations where immigration officers detain individuals suspected of violating immigration laws.

Immigration raids in the UK operate as a mechanism of fear and division. They target particular nationalities and groups who are seen as easily removable. They often take place in city centre businesses and workplaces, in areas with higher densities of specific nationalities, and along known migration routes. Raids can take place at any time of day, and ICE officers may arrive in unmarked vans.

There is a lack of clarity around the intelligence used to inform the raids and they are characterised by secrecy and rumour, which encourages the spread of fear, suspicion, insecurity, isolation, shame, and intimidation.

At the same time, their use is heralded as a form of ‘immigration control’ and increased immigration enforcement. They are a mechanism of the hostile environment and data shows raid operations are intensifying.
